Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of Grimscript at grimscript.co.uk (the "Service"), operated by ArcadeOn Studios ("we", "our", "us").

By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. Definitions

  • "Creator": A user who builds and publishes interactive fiction worlds on the Service.
  • "Player": A user who plays through worlds created by Creators.
  • "Studio": A team workspace on the Service where Creators collaborate and manage worlds.
  • "World": An interactive fiction experience created by a Creator, including its lore, NPCs, locations, quests, items, and rules.
  • "Session": A single gameplay instance between a Player's character and the AI game master within a World.
  • "Party": A multiplayer session with up to 4 Players sharing a single narrative.

2. Accounts

2.1 Registration

You must provide accurate information when creating an account. You may register using email/password or through Google social login. Email verification is required before accessing the Service.

2.2 Account Security

You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials. Two-factor authentication is available for additional security. Notify us immediately if you suspect unauthorised access.

2.3 Age Requirements

You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service. You must be at least 18 years old to access content rated "Mature" or "Adult" and to subscribe to paid plans.

3. Service Description

Grimscript is a platform that enables Creators to build AI-powered interactive fiction worlds and Players to experience them. The Service includes:

  • A visual World Builder for defining lore, NPCs, locations, quests, items, character classes, achievements, factions, codex entries, and world events
  • An AI game master that narrates gameplay and responds to player choices
  • Server-side dice rolling (d20 system) and combat mechanics
  • Persistent character state across sessions including inventory, equipment, gold, XP, reputation, and quest progress
  • Multiplayer party system with turn-based combat and simultaneous choice resolution
  • Studio management with team collaboration and role-based permissions (owner, admin, editor, viewer)
  • Content rating system (Everyone, Teen, Mature, Adult) with age gates
  • Embeddable widget for hosting worlds on external websites
  • Support ticket system

4. Subscriptions & Billing

4.1 Plans

The Service offers three tiers:

  • Free: Limited to 1 world and 50 AI messages per month
  • Creator (£14.99/month or £143.88/year): Up to 10 worlds, 2,000 messages/month, 2 collaborators
  • Studio (£49.99/month or £479.88/year): Unlimited worlds, 5,000 messages/month, 10 collaborators, premium AI model

4.2 Billing

Paid subscriptions are billed to your Studio (team), not your personal account. Payments are processed by Stripe in GBP. By subscribing, you authorise us to charge your payment method on a recurring basis.

4.3 Plan Changes

You may upgrade or downgrade your plan at any time through the billing dashboard. When switching plans, the change takes effect immediately with prorated billing. The previous plan is cancelled automatically.

4.4 Cancellation

You may cancel your subscription at any time through the billing dashboard or Stripe customer portal. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. No refunds are provided for partial months.

4.5 Founding Members

The first 50 Studios to register may receive the Creator plan free of charge indefinitely ("Founding Member" offer). This benefit is attached to the Studio and is non-transferable. We reserve the right to revoke this benefit if the Studio violates these Terms.

4.6 Usage Limits

If your Studio exceeds its monthly message allowance, further AI messages will be blocked until the next billing cycle or until you upgrade. You will see a clear upgrade prompt in the game interface. We do not charge overage fees.

5. Content & Conduct

5.1 Creator Content

Creators retain ownership of the content they create on the Service (world lore, NPC descriptions, system prompts, quest text, item descriptions, etc.). By publishing a world, you grant Grimscript a non-exclusive licence to display and distribute that content through the Service, including the public directory and embed widget.

5.2 Content Ratings

Creators must accurately rate their worlds:

  • Everyone: Suitable for all ages. No violence beyond cartoon slapstick. No romantic content.
  • Teen: Mild fantasy violence is acceptable. No gore, sexual content, or extreme themes.
  • Mature: Violence, dark themes, and strong language are permitted. No explicit sexual content. Players must verify they are 18+.
  • Adult: Unrestricted content within the creator's guidelines. Players must verify they are 18+. Excluded from the public directory by default.

Misrating content to circumvent age restrictions is a violation of these Terms.

5.3 Prohibited Content

You may not create or publish worlds containing:

  • Content that exploits or endangers minors in any way
  • Content that promotes real-world violence, terrorism, or illegal activities
  • Content that constitutes harassment, hate speech, or discrimination based on protected characteristics
  • Content that infringes on third-party intellectual property rights
  • Content designed to generate phishing, malware, or other security threats
  • Worlds designed to extract personal information from players

5.4 Player Conduct

Players must not:

  • Attempt to manipulate the AI into generating prohibited content
  • Use the Service to harass Creators or other Players
  • Exploit technical vulnerabilities in the Service
  • Use automated tools to send messages at scale
  • Abuse the multiplayer system to disrupt other players' sessions

5.5 Enforcement

We reserve the right to remove content, suspend accounts, or terminate access for violations of these Terms. Serious violations may be reported to relevant authorities.

6. AI-Generated Content

6.1 Nature of AI Responses

Game narration is generated by an AI language model. AI responses are probabilistic and may occasionally:

  • Produce inaccurate, inconsistent, or unexpected content
  • Fail to adhere perfectly to world rules or content rating guidelines
  • Be temporarily unavailable due to service disruptions

6.2 No Guarantee

We do not guarantee the quality, accuracy, or appropriateness of AI-generated content. Creators are responsible for setting appropriate system prompts and content guidelines for their worlds.

6.3 Dice Mechanics

Dice rolls are performed server-side using cryptographically secure random number generation. The AI does not determine dice outcomes — it only narrates the results of server-side rolls. In multiplayer, action priority is determined by d20 rolls for all players simultaneously.

6.4 State Changes

The AI may suggest changes to character state (HP, inventory, location, XP, reputation). These are validated server-side before being applied. Invalid state changes from the AI are silently discarded.

7. Intellectual Property

7.1 Service IP

The Grimscript platform, brand, code, and design are owned by ArcadeOn Studios. You may not copy, modify, or reverse-engineer the Service.

7.2 Creator IP

You retain all intellectual property rights to the original content you create. Deleting your worlds or account removes the licence granted in Section 5.1.

7.3 Player Content

Messages sent during gameplay sessions are stored as part of the session record. Players grant Grimscript the right to process these messages through the AI service and to display them as part of the session history.

7.4 Icon Assets

Item, equipment, and skill icons provided within the platform are licensed for use on the Service only. You may not extract or redistribute these assets outside of the Service.

8. Embed Widget

Creators with eligible plans may embed their worlds on external websites. By using the embed feature:

  • You are responsible for ensuring the embedded world is appropriate for the host website's audience
  • The embed will display a "Powered by Grimscript" attribution link
  • We may disable embed access if used on websites that violate these Terms

9. Support

Users may submit support tickets through the Service. We aim to respond within 24 hours. Support tickets are handled by email notification and the in-app support system.

10. Data & Privacy

Your use of the Service is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which describes how we collect, use, and protect your data. By using the Service, you consent to data processing as described in the Privacy Policy.

11. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by UK law:

  • The Service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind
  • We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the Service
  • Our total liability is limited to the amount you have paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim
  • We are not responsible for content created by Creators or generated by the AI

12. Termination

12.1 By You

You may delete your account at any time through your profile settings. Account deletion is permanent after a 30-day grace period. Characters, sessions, and worlds are soft-deleted and may be recoverable during the grace period.

12.2 By Us

We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms, with or without notice depending on the severity of the violation.

12.3 Effect of Termination

Upon termination, your access to the Service ceases. Creator content in published worlds may remain accessible until the account deletion is finalised.

13. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via email or a prominent notice on the Service at least 14 days before taking effect. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance.

14. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Disputes shall be resolved in the courts of England and Wales, except where consumer protection regulations require otherwise.
